My musical journey began at around five years old, when I started singing and learning acoustic guitar. Between the ages of five and twelve, I continued developing my guitar skills, and at fifteen I took singing lessons, where I learned breathing techniques and developed my voice. Along the way, I also discovered a love for yodelling.
My music is influenced by singer-songwriter, country, folk, acoustic and traditional music. I play guitar, fiddle, piano and saxophone, and I draw inspiration from artists such as John Denver, Dolly Parton and many other incredible country musicians.
Music has taken me to a wide range of places across Shetland, from Mareel Auditorium to community halls in Baltasound, Haroldswick, Uyeasound, Cullivoe, Mid Yell and Scalloway. I have also performed in more unusual and memorable places, including the Viking longhouse, marquee and show shed in Unst, as well as around Hermaness and Burrafirth Beach.
One of my achievements has been receiving the award for Best Solo Vocalist. Every performance gives me another opportunity to grow, share my music and connect with people.
My experience with SaxaVord Sessions introduced me to the world of music technology, including analogue equipment and the work that goes on behind the music. It has also helped shape the way I think about building a future in music.
One lesson that has stayed with me is to appreciate the people you meet along the way, including musicians who have years of experience behind them. If you dream of becoming a star, remember that everyone has to start somewhere. Keep learning, work hard and never take opportunities for granted.
I am currently working on my album, The Only Thing in My Way. It is personal to me and explores the secrets and feelings that can be difficult to say out loud, as well as the hurt of standing by people who do not always stand by you.
At its heart, the album is about finding the courage to believe in yourself and remembering that you can become anything you want to be.
My dream is to travel the world through music, make a living doing what I love, and share my story with people everywhere. I want my music to leave people feeling inspired and moved, and to make them want to come back and listen again.
This is only the beginning of my journey — and I look forward to sharing more of it through my music.
